Just because Thor is never actually encountered in God of War, doesn't mean his influence isn't felt all over the game. The Thor character has risen to prominence thanks to Chris Hemsworth's portrayal in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the anticipation for his role in Ragnarök is palpable. Kind of like Anthony Hopkins winning the Academy Award for Best Actor in less than half an hour of screen time in The Silence of the Lambs, Thor's appearance in God of War is so good he doesn't even need to have a line of dialogue. The entire encounter is played off as Atreus' dream, but is clearly implied to be a prophetic vision. His face isn't even shown - just his hand, hip, and hammer like in the above image. He contributes to the Norse saga's scale in the opposite way that Mimir elucidates - by introducing a sort of ancient and unknowable power to Midgard.Įssentially making a cameo appearance in the 2018 game and again in the God of War Ragnarök trailer, Thor is still one of the more memorable side characters in the game. Jörmungandr's physical presence is clearly domineering, but his mystique similarly enraptures, seeing as Kratos (and likewise the player) can't even understand him. His presence is reminiscent of some of the more breathtaking set pieces from the original God of War games, such as Kratos climbing on Gaia as she scales Mount Olympus. Although Jörmungandr is instrumental in the overarching story and plot of God of War, there's a feeling that he will play an even more important role in Ragnarök. This time paradox introduces one of the more compelling and foreshadowing mysteries that goes unsolved in God of War. Jörmungandr's role in God of War introduces a time loop paradox, since said conflict with Thor is prophesied to occur during Ragnarök, where Thor hits the World Serpent so hard it splinters Yggdrasil, the World Tree, and sends the Serpent back in time. According to Mimir, the only one who can communicate with the Giant, Jörmungandr appeared suddenly in the Lake of Nine after a legendary conflict with Thor. The massive World Serpent is the last Giant left in Midgard (following the death of Kratos' second wife), and is so large that he encircles the entire realm. Though Jörmungandr is a side character, he also doubles as one of God of War's most striking set-pieces. Her story is already exceptionally tragic, and will likely be a major emotional cornerstone in Ragnarök. Freya's heavy involvement in God of War deepens its examination of family, and helps contribute to the personal narrative the game is celebrated for. Freya already goes through significant character development in the 2018 game, transitioning from someone sympathetic to what Kratos is trying to achieve in raising Atreus, to the bird-woman in God of War Ragnarök attacking Kratos and seeking revenge for the death of her son. The estranged nature of Freya and Baldur's relationship is an eventuality that Kratos fears for himself and Atreus. With Baldur prophesied to die an unnecessary death, Freya cast a spell to save him from all harm, inadvertently robbing him of all physical sensations. Kratos desperately wants to protect Atreus from the violent pitfalls of being a god, and Freya exemplifies the most drastic outcome of such worries. Throughout the entirety of the game, Kratos grapples with his son's godhood, and likely sees a potential future for himself when examining Freya's relationship with her own son, Baldur. Regardless of their input, each left a considerable mark on the deeply personal and familial tale told in 2018's God of War, and collectively add to the anticipation for its dearly awaited sequel.įreya's character arc in God of War is so impactful because of its proximity to that of Kratos. Some of God of War's best side characters played major roles, while others remained on the fringes of the narrative. Whether it was by design or simply a coincidence in writing, Kratos managed to separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak. God of War's best side characters are uniformly those expected to reappear in Ragnarök. Many will probably die at the hands of Kratos and Atreus, but seeing as the aging god of war is trying to turn a new leaf, there may be a happier ending in store for some in comparison to that of Zeus and company. Every character is expected to have their respective arc wrapped up in GoW Ragnarök, which concludes the series' Norse story.
